Police have arrested three suspects in connection with a machete attack and mugging of a journalist near Mohammadpur Police Station in Dhaka.
The arrest was made on Friday (July 25), and the stolen mobile phone was also recovered.
The arrestees were identified as Yusuf, 26, Siam, 23, and Zahurul, 22.
All three were detained around 11am, confirmed Mohammadpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Ali Iftekhar Hasan.
"Three muggers have been arrested and the mobile phone has been recovered. We will take further action after proper verification," OC Hasan told reporters.
Ahmad Wadud, a journalist, was attacked and robbed on Thursday night (July 24) near Mohammadpur. In a Facebook post around 3:30am, he described how he was attacked with a machete and had his phone and wallet snatched. He also claimed that when he went to the police station to report the incident, the officer on duty dismissed him and said, "If you carry such an expensive phone, of course it will get snatched."
When asked about the comment, OC Ali Iftekhar Hasan denied making such a remark. "Why would I say something like that? He wrote what he wanted to," the officer said when contacted by Banglanews24.
Following public attention to the incident, two police personnel from Mohammadpur Police Station were withdrawn. Police also launched an operation that led to the arrest of the three suspects.
