Workers from the RAK Ceramics factory in Gazipur’s Sripur upazila staged a protest on the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway at Jainabazar on Sunday (July 27), demanding salary increases and other benefits.
According to police and local sources, the workers had been raising their demands for a long time, but the factory authorities failed to respond. In protest, the workers blocked the highway in the morning, leading to heavy traffic congestion and widespread public suffering.
Law enforcement, including police and industrial police, arrived at the scene to disperse the protesters. However, the situation escalated into a clash between workers and police.
To regain control, police fired tear gas, eventually dispersing the crowd and clearing the highway.
Gazipur Industrial Police-2 Superintendent AKM Zahirul Islam said the blockade lasted for about 45 minutes before traffic movement returned to normal.
