5 student leaders sued for extortion in Gulshan

Five student leaders from two organisations have been sued for allegedly demanding Tk50 lakh in extortion from the residence of a former lawmaker in Dhaka’s Gulshan area.

Sub-Inspector Anjuman Ara of Gulshan Police Station confirmed the matter on Sunday (July 27), saying that a case was filed after police arrested the accused on Saturday following a complaint lodged by the victim.

The five are Md Siam (22), Sadman Sadab (21), Md Aminul Islam, Ibrahim Hossain (24), and Abdur Razzak Riyad (23). They are reportedly affiliated with Baisammobirodhi Chhatra Andolon (Anti-Discrimination Student Movement) and Ganotantrik Chhatra Sangsad (Democratic Student Union).

Gulshan Police OC Hafizur Rahman said five men went to former MP Shammi Ahmed’s house, identifying themselves as coordinators of certain organisations, and demanded Tk50 lakh from her husband as she was not home. Days later, they allegedly collected Tk10 lakh. On Friday around 8pm, they returned to collect gold ornaments, but the family alerted police, who detained them on the spot and took them to the station.

Following the incident, Anti-Discrimination Student Movement expelled three of its members — Dhaka city convener Ibrahim Hossain Munna, and members Md Sakadaun Siam and Sadab — for violating organisational rules. The decision was announced in a press release issued by the group’s office secretary Shahadat Hossain on Saturday night.

Similarly, Ganotantrik Chhatra Sangsad also expelled two of its central leaders — Jane Alam Apu and Abdur Razzak Bin Sulaiman — after confirming their involvement in the extortion attempt, according to a separate statement sent to the media.

Police said investigations are ongoing.
