The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court today upheld a High Court judgment that had scrapped the proceedings of a defamation case filed against Professor Dr Muhammad Yunus, Chief Adviser of the 2007 interim government and Nobel laureate.
A three-member bench of the apex court, headed by Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury, passed the order by dismissing a state petition challenging the High Court verdict.
Additional Attorney General Aneek Rushd Haque represented the state, while advocate-on-record Md Taufique Hossain appeared for Dr Yunus.
The defamation case was filed in 2010 by JASAD Joint Secretary Nazrul Islam Chunnu over a statement made by Dr Yunus in 2007. In 2011, a petition was filed with the High Court seeking dismissal of the proceedings. The High Court on October 24, 2024, accepted the plea and scrapped the case.
The state later filed a leave to appeal against the HC judgment. The chamber judge court of the Appellate Division had earlier set July 27 for hearing the matter before the regular bench.
