Three people, including a woman and her child, were killed after being run over by a lorry in Ashulia, Savar.
Following the accident, local residents staged a protest by blocking the road.
The accident occurred around 9:30 p.m. on Sunday (August 3) near the Bypile Central Mosque area on the Nabinagar-Chandra highway. Immediately after the incident, agitated locals blocked the road and began protesting. However, police later intervened and brought the situation under control.
The deceased have been identified as rickshaw passenger and businessman Altaf Hossain (50), Nurjahan (24), and her four-year-old son Abdullah. All of them were residents of the Bolibhadra area in Ashulia.
The identity of the injured rickshaw puller has not yet been confirmed.
CCTV footage of the incident shows that an autorickshaw was travelling in the wrong direction from Bypile toward EPZ. At one point, the rickshaw veered in front of an oncoming lorry and fell into a roadside water-filled pothole. Losing control, the rickshaw overturned, and the lorry’s rear wheel ran over it.
According to the highway police, one person died at the scene. Locals rescued three others—including the rickshaw puller and the child—and took them to Gonoshasthaya Samaj Vittik Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared two of them dead.
Eyewitness Moinul Islam, a local shopkeeper, told Banglanews, “I was at my shop when I heard screams. I rushed out and saw the rickshaw overturned, with one person already dead at the scene. The others were taken to the hospital.”
Another eyewitness, Liton Ahmed, said, “I was crossing the road when the rickshaw fell into a pothole and overturned right in front of me. A large lorry coming from the opposite direction ran over it. One person died instantly, and the others were taken to the hospital. Among the three, one was a child and another a woman.”
Savar Highway Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Saleh Ahmed told Banglanews, “The rickshaw puller was travelling in the wrong direction toward EPZ with three passengers. On the way, the rickshaw fell into a pothole and overturned. Just then, a lorry coming from the opposite direction ran over it. One person died on the spot. The other three, including the woman and child, were taken to Gonoshasthaya Medical College Hospital in critical condition, where the doctor declared the woman and child dead. One person remains under treatment.”
He added that enraged locals attempted to block the road after the incident, but police brought the situation under control.
