Members of law enforcement agencies on Friday (October 17) dispersed agitated July fighters from the South Plaza of the National Parliament building, the venue for the upcoming July Charter signing ceremony. The protesters had occupied the area for nearly three hours before being driven away with batons.
Around 10:30 am, the protesters broke through the security barricade and entered the main stage of the ceremony. They alleged that the charter undermined their contribution, failed to provide legal recognition, and lacked proper acknowledgment of their role.
Professor Ali Riaz, Vice-President of the National Consensus Commission, later arrived at the scene and announced an amendment to the fifth clause of the charter’s declaration to ensure the dignity and security of the July fighters.
Over 500 protesters sat down on the main stage and in the section reserved for guests. They claimed the government had not consulted them during the drafting of the charter and that the document, like the earlier declaration, lacked legal validity and due recognition. They demanded that a 10-member representative team from among them be allowed on stage.
Shortly before 1:00 pm, Commission Vice-President Ali Riaz and other members appeared on stage and assured the July fighters of justice for the July killings, due honor, financial assistance, and security.
However, the assurances failed to calm the protesters, prompting a police intervention. Officers first warned the demonstrators to leave peacefully but soon resorted to force. Tear gas was fired, and several protesters were beaten and dispersed.
Some demonstrators expressed anger, saying, “They will do politics over our blood but deny us legal recognition—why beat us then?”
The protesters eventually retreated after clashes erupted, during which they hurled stones at police, who responded with more tear gas.
The July Charter signing ceremony is scheduled for 4:00 pm, with Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus expected to attend. However, uncertainty remains over whether all parties will participate in the event.
