Adviser for law, justice and parliamentary affairs, Professor Asif Nazrul, has praised the army for its cooperation with proceedings at the International Crimes Tribunal, saying the appearance of serving personnel before the court was “highly commendable.”
Responding to questions from reporters at the Secretariat on Wednesday (October 22), he said the manner in which the troops arrived—whether on their own or escorted—and the support extended by senior military officials, including the army chief, reflected respect for the rule of law, which the government views positively.
Asked about the court’s order sending the officers to prison and why they were being kept in a “sub-jail,” the law adviser said decisions on where detainees are held fall entirely under the Ministry of Home Affairs.
“They will act as they deem appropriate; this is not within my remit,” he said.
Recent government notices have designated a Military Engineer Services (MES) building inside Dhaka Cantonment as a temporary sub-jail under the Prisoners Act.
