DHAKA: The presence of leaders and activists of Bangladesh Jamaat Islami, the main ally of BNP in the four-party alliance, was very poor in number during Sunday’s hartal.

“The leaders and activists of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) brought out rallies in support of hartal across the capital, but Jamaat was seen only at three spots. They maintained a safe distance,” says a spot account of the hartal scenes.

Prof Tashnim Alam, central publicity secretary of Jamaat, denied the allegation and said the participation of the party’s leaders-activists was ‘very spontaneous’.

He also said, “The senior leaders and activists of the party brought out rallies in different areas of the city since morning.”

He also informed the leaders-activists brought out a rally from Purana Paltan to Dainik Bangla at 6:00am.

Besides, they also brought out another rally at Bijoynagar under the leadership of AHM Hamidur Rahman MP, general secretary of Metropolitan Jamaat, and police intercepted the rally on way to Purana Paltan.
