DHAKA: BNP chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia congratulated the countrymen on observing a “successful” hartal Sunday at her call to protest various acts and failures of the government they listed.

The opposition leader and ex-premier gave the thanks while presiding over the BNP standing committee meeting on Sunday night, after her party and allies enforced the general strike across the country, amid sporadic clashes in the capital.

Meanwhile, the BNP chairperson visited the residence of Mirza Abbas on Sunday night as law enforcers raided the house during Sunday`s dawn-to-dusk hartal, reports banglanews24.com.bd correspondents.

Afroza Abbas, wife of Mirza Abbas, alleged that Rab personnel “broke into our house and beat up inmates, including my mother-in-law”.

Mirza Abbas, member of the party standing committee and ex-minister, was arrested from a procession in the early hours of the strike. Later, he was shown arrested in a case filed for torching a bus.

The standing-committee meeting started at 9:00 pm and lasted one hour, doing the stocktaking of the anti-government action programme and the next course to follow.
