DHAKA: The opposition BNP will stage human-chain demonstrations in district and divisional headquarters on July 7 in protest against “attacks” party men and their arrests during Sunday’s dawn-to-dusk hartal.
BNP Secretary-General Khandaker Delwar Hossain made the announcement of the fresh programme from a demonstration staged at Muktangon on Monday afternoon as a part of the party’s countrywide demonstrations.
“BNP will hold protest programmes and form human chains from morning to 12 noon on the day”, said Delwar.
Their demonstrations would continue until the “harassment and repression” by the government ended, the BNP leader told the gathering.
He demanded punishment of the affiliated organizations of the ruling Awami League for allegedly unleashing attack on the activists of BNP’s student and youth wings.
“If you cannot control your student and youth organizations, then ban those,” he said.
As announced, the former ruling party sponsored the demonstrations in protest against government’s ‘unfair action’ and demanding immediate release of the detained BNP leaders and workers.
Presided over by BNP vice-chairman and Dhaka City Mayor Sadek Hossain Khoka, the function was also addressed, among others, by BNP standing committee members Dr. Khondokar Mosharraf Hossain, MK Anwar, Dr. Abdul Moyeen Khan and adviser to the chairperson Ahmad Azam Khan.
Party’s district units also arranged demonstrations in their respective areas as part of the central plan of action.
