Police detained 11 Awami League activists during a sudden protest in Gulistan on Sunday (May 18), following the government's ban on all party activities.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Deputy Commissioner Muhammad Talebur Rahman confirmed the matter.
He said that intelligence officers stopped the protesters as they marched through the area.
The government officially banned the Awami League and its affiliated organizations on May 12, nine months after the party was ousted in a student-led uprising. The ban prohibits all forms of political activities, including rallies, media publications, and online campaigns, until trials at the International Crimes Tribunal are completed.
The Awami League lost power in August last year after mass protests forced Sheikh Hasina to resign and flee to India. According to UN reports, the uprising resulted in over 1,400 deaths, with thousands injured.
Authorities have increased security in Dhaka to prevent further demonstrations.
