Supporters of BNP leader Ishraque Hossain continued their sit-in protest for the eighth straight day on Thursday (May 22.), demanding mayorship of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC).
According to reports, leaders and activists of BNP and its associate bodies were seen occupying the intersection in front of Kakrail Mosque in the capital this morning.
They stayed there overnight, chanting slogans despite heavy rain and storm.
Their protest centers on the demand to implement the gazette issued by the Election Commission declaring Ishraque as the DSCC mayor. They also want him to be sworn in immediately.
Meanwhile, the High Court is set to deliver its order today on a writ petition that challenges the validity of the EC’s gazette and seeks a directive to withhold the oath-taking ceremony.
The order was initially scheduled for Wednesday. In anticipation, party activists began gathering near Kakrail Mosque from Wednesday afternoon, where they stayed throughout the night.
Law enforcement agencies remain on alert in the Jamuna and Kakrail areas. Security has been tightened around the High Court premises, where police, army, and BGB members have been deployed. Armoured vehicles and other military transports are also positioned in the area.
