DHAKA: The Appellate Division on Monday cancelled the acquittal order issued by High Court in favour of Barrister Nazmul Huda and his wife Sigma Huda in a bribe case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
A four-member bench led by Justice SK Sinha passed the order in the afternoon.
On March 21 of 2007, ACC official Shafiqul Islam filed a law suit with Dhanmandi Thana stating that the then Communications Minister Nazmul Huda took Tk 3.40 crore as bribe from Mir Zahir Hossain, managing director of a construction company Akhter Hossain Ltd, assuring him of providing construction works.
On August 26 of 2007, a special tribunal of Dhaka sentenced five years of imprisonment to Nazmul Huda and fined Tk 2.5 crore while three years of imprisonment to Sigma Huda.
Barrister Nazmul Huda and Sigma Huda appealed against the verdict.
On March 20 of 2011, the HC cleared them of the charges.
Later, ACC and state appealed against the HC verdict. The appellate division on Monday passed the cancellation order of the bail release.
Advocate Khurshid Alam Khan moved in favour of ACC and additional attorney general M Momtaz Uddin Fakir was the prosecutor.
Advocate Khurshid Alam Khan told banglanews that the appellate division ordered for holding hearing again cancelling the release order by HC.
However, he added, Nazmul Huda and his wife Sigma Huda need not seek bail release.
