DHAKA: BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia on Friday claimed that the democracy earned by the sacrifice of hundreds of martyrs, is not safe yet.
She also slammed the government saying the activities of incumbent government are showing characteristics of autocracy and partiality.
Khaleda Zia came up with the criticism in a statement on the eve of the anniversary of fall of autocratic regime of HM Ershad on December 6, 1990.
She also paid homage to the martyrs who sacrificed their lives in the mass movement against the dictatorship of Ershad.
On December 6 in 1990, democracy was reinstated in the country after nine years of struggle against the autocratic regime of HM Ershad. Since then the day is being observed as ‘Swoirachar Poton Dibosh (Autocracy Decline Day)’.
BNP chairperson, in the statement, said in March 1982, breaching his professional commitment, Ershad seized state power forcibly by removing the elected President Abdus Sattar and halted the Constitution and practice of multiparty politics that was revived by late President Ziaur Rahman in 1977.
She also termed the January 5 general election as partial. Khaleda claimed that the government has endangered the freedom of citizens by establishing cruel one-party ruling system in the country.
She urged everyone to be united against the government to reinstate democracy.
