DCC elections to divert attention: Fakhrul

DHAKA: Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) acting-secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir claimed that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s urge for immediate Dhaka City Corporation Elections is a ‘trick’ of diverting mass attention from the anti-government movements.

The BNP leader made the statement Tuesday morning while exchanging views with journalists at Labaid Specialised Hospital in city’s Dhanmondi area.

However, Mirza Fakhrul went at the hospital to visit eminent filmmaker Chashi Nazrul Islam who is undergoing treatment in a critical condition.

The BNP acting-secretary general claimed that the government did not agree to go for elections earlier following the fear of loss.

He further said that removing the elected representatives, the Awami League government had divided Dhaka city into two parts and set administrators at the corporations ‘illegally’.

“But, now, the announcement has come at a moment when people are being united for an anti-government movement led by BNP,” he added.

“This is nothing but a trick of the incumbent government to divert people’s attention from the opposition’s movement, but, their conspiracy will not sustain any longer.”

However, Mirza Fakhrul’s comment came a day after as Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina asked to arrange the elections of both Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) and Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) in early 2015.

The premier made the announcement in a cabinet meeting held at the Secretariat in city on Monday.
