Road accident reduced: Obaidul

NARAYANGANJ: Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader claimed that the road accidents in the country reduced.

The minister came up with the observation while visiting Meghna Bridge in Sonargaon of Narayanganj on Sunday noon.

Mentioning the remarks of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) chairperson Khaleda Zia that the road accidents of the country have been increased, Obaidul said he can challenge Khaleda about the matter.

The minister will apologize if Khaleda gives any evidence supporting her remarks, he added.

Obaidul also said he asked the probe committee to submit their report on journalist Zaglul Ahmed Chowdhury killing in road crash within seven working days.

The authorities have already declared Tk 200,000 as reward to nab the accused bus driver and helper.

However, the construction works of alternative Kanchpur Bridge, Meghna Bridge and Meghna-Goumati Bridge would begin from January next, costing Tk 9,000 crore financed by Japanese donor organization JICA, the minister added.

Narayanganj deputy commissioner (DC) Anisur Rahman Mia, Superintendent of Police Dr Khandaker Mahiuddin and Sonargaon Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Abu Naser were among others accompanied the minister during the visit.
