Fakhrul exempted from defamation charge

DHAKA:  BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir was exempted from a defamation charge for making ‘derogatory comments’ against former state minister for law Qamrul Islam.

Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court’s magistrate Anwar Sadat passed the order on Wednesday.

Earlier in the day, the court kept the decision on an exemption plea filed by Fakhrul’s lawyer Sanaullah Mia, pending after hearing.

Mirza Fahkrul, at a discussion held at National Press Club on July 14 in 2010, termed Qamrul Islam, the then state minister for law, as ‘mentally ill’ and ‘mad’.

Later, on July 18, Bangabandhu Foundation president Abdul Malek filed a defamation suit for the derogatory remarks.
