RAJSHAHI: Three activists of Chhatra Shibir, student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami, have been arrested from Assam colony area of the district over assaulting police on Tuesday, the first day nationwide blockade called by BNP.
The arrestees are Ilius Sheikh, 35, son of Abdus Samad Sheikh, Shamsuddin, 35, son of Ismail Hossain, and Nizam Uddin, 34, son of Khorshed Bapari of Assam colony area of the district.
Confirming the matter, Rapid Action Battalion-5 senior ASP Mirza Golam Sarwar told banglanews that the Shibir men were arrested on Thursday night. Details would be informed at the press conference later on the day.
On Tuesday (January 6), Shibir-men brought out a procession in Shalbagan area of the city, setting fire on roads pouring petrol.
Being informed, police rushed to the spot to disperse them. Shibir men then attacked police patrol car near Alif Lam Meem Brick Field on Rajshahi-Naogaon highway with bamboo stick and iron rods and beat two constables of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police indiscriminately.
Later, constables Shafiqul Islam and Amjad of Shah Makhdum Police Station were admitted to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital. Later, Amjad was shifted to Rajshahi police line hospital.
Pictures of video footages of the attack were published in the media, drawing concern of every quarter of the country.
Following the attack, police launched a major manhunt across the district and nabbed the Shibir men on Thursday night.
