DHAKA: The second day of the 36-hour hartal is being marked by sporadic incidents of violence as activists of BNP-led 20-party alliance blasted cocktails and carried out violence in different districts of Dhaka and Khulna divisions Thursday.
Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and its student’s wing Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) separately enforced the 36-hour hartal protesting arrest and killing of its leaders.
In the capital, blockaders and hartal supporters exploded cocktails at places since early morning.
Besides, Shibir men brought out brisk procession in city’s Shahjadpur, North Badda and Confidence Tower areas around 7:30am.
The unruly Shibir activists exploded at least 10 cocktails in Shahjadpur area of Gulshan in the capital, said AB Habib, Sub-Inspector of Gulshan police station.
However, additional law enforcers have been deployed at violence-prone points of the city.
Besides, nationwide road-rail-waterway blockade is also underway demanding a fresh election under a nonpartisan caretaker administration. Thursday is the 17th day of blockade.
Blockaders set fire to Chandpur district Awami League office located at Comilla road of the town around 6:00am.
On Monday, BNP Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi declared the shutdown in Dhaka and Khulna divisions, beginning from Wednesday 6:00am.
JCD also called a 36-hour hartal in Dhaka district and city from Wednesday protesting the ‘killing’ of its Khilgaon Thana unit general secretary of the city.
