Arson attacks, blasts mark blockade

DHAKA:  An auto-rickshaw driver was killed and two others were injured in Sylhet, a truck driver sustained burn injuries in Moulvibazar in arson attacks by blockaders late Thursday during the countrywide non-stop blockade enforced by BNP-led alliance. 

Banglanews Sylhet correspondent reported that miscreants hurled petrol bombs at a truck (Dhaka Ta-16-4239) Bonikona under South Surma around 11:45pm.

The arson attack led its driver to lost control and ran over an auto-rickshaw, leaving the auto driver dead on the spot and truck driver and helper badly burnt.

The deceased was identified as Shahjahan Mia, 30, son of Aktar Mian of Ahmedpur village of the upazila while truck helper Nironjon Singh, who suffered 70 percent burns,  was admitted to Sylhet Osmani Medical College and Hospital.

Besides, another arson attack presumably carried out by blockaders on a truck injured two siblings, including its driver, in Lamakazi area of the district.

Injured driver’s brother Al Hasan was also rushed to the hospital with 50 percent burns.

Besides, stray incidents of vandalism and arson attacks to vehicles, arrest of BNP-Jamaat leaders and cocktails blast were also reported from different parts of the country including, Moulvibazar,  Narayanganj, Habiganj, Sirajganj and Bogra, Noakhali, Narail, Magura, Chittagong and Manikganj.

In Narayanganj, blockaders blasted couple of cocktails and vandalized 10 vehicles in Napathar area in the upazila at 1:30am on Friday, 18th day of nationwide blockade called by BNP.

In Habiganj, miscreants hurled three cocktails at the residence of assistant police super (South) Sazzad Ibe Raihan in Tinkona Pukurpar area of the district town around 7:45am.

In Sirajganj, miscreants set fire to Salonga Thana unit Chhatra League late on Thursday.

Leaders of BCL unit blamed Jamaat-Shibir for the arson attack.

In Bogra, a shallow engine-run boat, owned by an activist of Awami League, was set alight presumably by blockaders at Dhaarborsha char ghat in Sariakandi upazila around 6:45am.

In Moulvibazar, blockaders torched a truck in Bhoirab bazaar area in Srimangal Upazila around 11:30pm Thursday, leaving its driver, Saiz Uddin, 43, badly brunt.

Law enforcers, in ongoing special drives to nab the criminals involved in subotages, detained 27 people, including four BNP-Jamaat men, in Narail while 10 BNP-Jamaat leaders-activists in Noakhali, five BNP-Jamaat men in Magura and 11 people including Swechchasebok Dal leader in Manikganj, 12 BNP-Jamaat men in Chittagong.
