251 suspected anarchists held in nationwide drives

DHAKA: At least 251 people, mostly leaders and activists of BNP and its key ally Jamaat-e-Islami, were detained in different districts including the capital for their alleged involvement in ongoing sabotage.

Members of joint forces, in a nightlong special drive, detained six suspected anarchists from Jatrabari, two from Kadamtali and one from Demra areas in the city.

Besides, law enforcers, in joint drives, rounded up hundreds of people from Dhaka city, Satkhira, Jessore, Meherpur, Khulna, Pabna, Jamalpur, Chittagong, Noakhali, Habiganj Brahmanbaria, Dinajpur and Gaibandha districts.

Police detained 49 people, mostly BNP-Jamaat leaders and activists, from Pabna, 43 others, including 8 BNP-Jamaat men, from Jessore and 42 others, including 12 BNP-Jamaat men, from Satkhira, 29 from Khulna, and 21 people from Habiganj

Khulna Metropolitan Police (KMP) spokesperson additional police commissioner Moniruzzaman Mithu, Pabna assistant superintendent of police (ASP) Siddikur Rahman, Jessore police spokesperson ASP Reshma Sharmin, Hobiganj Sadar uapzila ASP Masudur Rahman Monir and Satkhira district police information officer Sub-Inspector Kamal separately confirmed the detention to banglanews. 

Moreover, police nabbed a Union Parishad unit ameer (chief) of Jamaat in Begumganj upazila of Noakhali, 4 BNP-Jamaat men in Meherpur, 5 Jamaat activists in Brahmanbaria, 8 in Jamalpur, 11 in Chittagong, 12 in Dinajpur and 17 BNP-Jamaat activists in Gaibandha.

Senior police officers of the respective districts confirmed the matters to banglanews.
