SIRAJGANJ: Jamaat-e-Islami called dawn-to-dusk hartal for Wednesday in the district protesting the death of its leader who sustained bullet injuries during Sunday’s police drive at Bakua village in Ullahpara upazila.
Jamaat Sirajganj district unit secretary Zahidul Islam confirmed the matter to banglanews on Monday morning.
Saidur Rahman, 40, general secretary of upazila’s Sadar Union Jamaat-e-Islami, succumbed to his injuries at Sirajganj General Hospital early Monday.
Orthopedic doctor Oliul Islam Talukdar of Sirajganj General Hospital confirmed the matter of death.
Police said acting on tip off that some people sat on secret meeting to create sabotage on Ullapara highway, they conducted a drive at Bakua village around 3:30pm Sunday.
Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, the Jamaat and BNP men threw cocktails targeting them.
For self-defense, police also fired several round of bullets from shotgun on the attackers and later, detained the bullet-wound Jamaat leader Saidur.
Later, Saidur was taken to the hospital where on-duty doctor declared him dead around 1:30am.
