DHAKA: Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Matiur Rahman Nizami Friday said the government finally could not change the result of Chittagong City Corporation polls as the “brave Chittagonians” were aware and took position at EC offices in a nightlong watch.

“Though the government was ready with all mechanisms, the result was not reversed,” he said at a function at the National Press Club on Friday morning.

The city unit of the Forum of Engineers and Architects (FEA) organized the rally to protest ‘oppression’ on Amar Desh acting editor Mahmudur Rahman and demand his unconditional release.

Forum President Engineer Sheikh Al Amin presided over the meet.

Nizami said, “The Chittagong City Corporation election was a test case for the government--and they were defeated. If a midterm election is held now, the people would say ‘no’ to the ruling party through ballot.”

He also said the 18-month regime of the government proved that they would fail to complete their tenure.

Nizami hoped the government would be decent in dealing with Mahmudur Rahman.

The Jamaat chief thought that the premier is “misguided by the communists” is running the country in ‘Baksal’ style.

Assistant secretary-general of Jamaat Barrister Abdur Razzak and Dhaka Unit Ameer Maolana Rafiqul Islam Khan, among others, spoke at the rally.
