DHAKA: BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia has been released from prison for six months by the government with some conditions on humanitarian grounds.
The former prime minister came out of the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University around 4:15 pm and started to go to her Gulshan residence around 4:25 on Wednesday.
BNP leaders and activists thronged there to get a glimpse of Khaleda Zia defying coronavirus risks when Bangladesh and the rest of the world are marinating social distancing.
On Tuesday, law minister Anisul Huq said that the sentences of the former prime minister were suspended as per section 401 of the Criminal Code of Procedure (CrPcC).
The BNP chairperson was being treated at the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University for old-age complications since April 1 last year.
The government also put two conditions on her release. Under the conditions, Khaleda Zia will have to take treatment by staying at her residence and will not be able to leave the country.
