Law Minister Anisul Huq said the extension of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s conditional release would depend on her current health condition and grounds of her application.

The minister made the remarks at secretariat on Monday in response to journalist’s query about the application submitted by Khaleda Zia’s family seeking extension of her release. 

Anisul said: “I want to make one thing clear first. Khaleda Zia is not out on bail granted by a court. Her family submitted an application to the home minister last March seeking her release for treatment. Later she was released on humanitarian grounds for six months under executive order on March 25.”

“Home minister informed me that Khaleda’s six months’ release will be ended on September 24. Her family submitted another application for extending the release date further. Home Ministry sent me a copy of that application. However, it has not reached to the Law Ministry yet,” Anisul said.

Khaleda Zia is in jail since February 8, 2018, the day she was convicted in a graft case.

She was shifted to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Hospital on April 1, 2019 and received treatment there till March this year.

On March 25 this year, Khaleda’s sentence has been suspended for six months and currently she is staying in her Gulshan house.
