The Supreme Court on Monday upheld a High Court order that granted anticipatory bail to former Awami League lawmaker AKM Awal and his wife Laila Parvin in two corruption cases filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
An Appellate Division bench, headed by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain, passed the order dismissing a petition, seeking a stay on the HC order, filed by the ACC.
Advocate Md Khurshid Alam Khan moved for the ACC while Advocate Awshafur Rahman represented the couple.
Earlier on October 5, the High Court granted a four-week bail to the couple in the cases.
Md Ali Akbar, deputy director of ACC, filed the two cases against the couple with its integrated district office-1 in Dhaka on September 30.
In one case, AKM Awal was accused of amassing Tk 33.27 crore illegally. In another case, the anti-corruption watchdog accused his wife Laila Parvin for amassing Tk 10.98 crore illegally.
In the wealth statement submitted to ACC, Awal hid wealth of Tk 15.72 crore.
