Bangladesh lose 4-3 to Hong Kong in AFC qualifiers

Despite taking an early lead, Bangladesh suffered a shocking 4-3 defeat to Hong Kong China in a crucial AFC Asian Cup qualifying match at the National Stadium on last night.

With the loss, Bangladesh’s hopes of advancing to the final round of the Asian Cup were dashed, while Hong Kong strengthened its position to qualify for the tournament to be held in Saudi Arabia next year.

Bangladesh took the lead in the 13th minute through a brilliant free kick from English Premier League midfielder Hamza Choudhury, whose curling shot deflected off a defender before finding the back of the net — sending the home crowd into jubilation. It was Hamza’s second international goal for Bangladesh, following his strike against Bhutan in June.

However, Hong Kong equalized just before halftime when forward Everton netted from close range after a well-taken corner, silencing the Dhaka crowd.

After the break, substitute Raphael Markies turned the tide, scoring twice in the 49th and 74th minutes to give Hong Kong a commanding 3-1 lead.

Bangladesh fought back late, with Sheikh Morsalin pulling one back in the 85th minute and Shamit Shome equalizing in stoppage time with a close-range header, sparking hopes of a comeback.

But in a dramatic finale, Raphael completed his hat-trick moments before the final whistle, sealing a thrilling 4-3 victory for Hong Kong China.

Midfielder Sohel Rana captained Bangladesh in the absence of regular skipper Jamal Bhuyan, who was left out of the starting lineup.

Bangladesh XI: Shakil Topu, Sheikh Morsalin, Hamza Choudhury, Rakib Hossain, Foysal Ahmed, Mitul Marma, Tariq Raihan, Taj Uddin, Md Sohel Rana, Sohel Rana (captain), Saad Uddin.
