University teachers threaten non-stop strike

DHAKA: Teachers of public universities threatened to go for an indefinite work abstention from January 11 if mentionable progress in meeting-up their demands is not made by January 10.

The ultimatum was given from a sit-in and work stoppage program of teachers of 37 public universities on Thursday (January 7) on their respective campuses.

As per pre-declaration of Federation of Bangladesh University Teachers Association (FBUTA), the teachers observed the program from 11:00am to 2:00pm on the day.

While addressing the program of Dhaka University (DU) Teachers Association, its acting president professor Dr Imdadul Haque said, “We do not want to make the students hostage. If we had such intention, we didn’t take classes-examinations during last year’s petrol bomb violence putting our life at risk”.

“Moreover, we took additional classes on Fridays.”

He went on saying, “Teachers will not take any responsibility if classes of the universities halted due to wrong decision taken by a quarter of government. Ministers and bureaucrats of the ministries concerned will have to take the responsibility”.

Moderated by FBUTA secretary general and DU teachers’ association professor Dr ASM Maksud Kamal, the program was also addressed by association leaders including Professor Dr AJM Shafiul Alam Bhuiyan, Professor Nazma Shaheen, Professor Dr Lutfor Rahman and Professor Dr M Akhtaruzzaman.

More than 200 teachers of Dhaka University took part in sit-in demonstration.
