CHITTAGONG UNIVERSITY: Police recovered huge locally-made weapons and iron rods while ransacking six student dormitories of University of Chittagong (CU), following a clash between two groups of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), the student wing of the ruling party.

However, none was arrested in this connection.

Police conducted the raids from 10:30 pm Thursday (May 4) to 1:00 am Friday (May 5).

The varsity authority cooperated police to carry out raids at Shah Amanat Hall, Shah Jalal Hall, Alaol Hall, Suhrawardy Hall, A.F. Rahman Hall and Sahid Abdur Rob Hall in the varsity.

Police sources said that some sacks full with machetes and iron rods were recovered from Shah Jalal and Shah Amanat Halls.

Earlier, around 3 pm Thursday (May 4), a clash broke out between the followers of CU unit President Alamgir Tipu and followers of general secretary Fazle Rabbi at the university, leaving 7 students injured.

Sources from CU said that the two groups again intended to engage in clash in the evening. Later, police conducted raids in the six dormitories to detain the demonstrators.

However, there has been allegation that police recovered several rounds of bullets from a BCL activist in Shah Jalal Hall. But, the university authority denied the claim.

CU Assistant proctor Mizanur Rahman confirmed Banglanews about the recovery of arms and iron rods from the six dorms of CU.

However, details in this regard will be informed later, he added.
