SAVAR (DHAKA): Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid has warned that tougher action will be taken against those who set up private universities for business and profit.

He said this while speaking at the 7th Convocation ceremony of the Daffodil International University in Savar, on the outskirts of capital city, on Wednesday (January 10).

Nurul Islam Nahid chaired the function on behalf of President Md. Abdul Hamid, who is also chancellor of the university.

Prof Abdul Mannan, chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC), was present at the function, among others.

Nahid said that the aim of the owners of private universities, which have not yet shifted to their own campuses, is to make profit. These universities were set up to make profit in the name of higher education. The universities, which fail to fulfill the minimum requirements, cannot run further. Tougher legal action will be taken against them, he warned.

He also said that admission and tuition fees have to be bearable given the socio-economic conditions of the country. Besides, the thought of business and profit must be given up.

The minister further said, “The government doesn’t distinguish between students of private and public universities, because all of them are citizens and future of this country. However, I am happy that this university has arranged the convocation ceremony on its campus.”
