DHAKA: Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid said if authorities of private universities fail to control its students from joining movement, vice-chancellors will have to answer for it.

Though students of schools and colleges have returned to classes from their protest for safe roads, students of private universities took to streets after them.

The Education Minister came up with the directive after holding a meeting with the VCs of all private universities at the auditorium of Institute of Mother Language (IML) in city’s Segunbagicha area on Wednesday (August 8).

Students of schools and colleges started the movement following death of 2 college students in a city road crash on July 29. Their protest ended on August 5 but private university students started the movement on August 6.

The minister said, “Why did students of private universities come out to streets? It was unexpected. Some people might have spread rumors. VCs are responsible for controlling students. If they fail to carry out their duty, they must be held accountable for it. We the ministry and UGC will stand by you.”

Asking students and parents to be aware of the situation, Nurul Islam Nahid said all kinds of assistance will be given from the ministry and UGC.

Chaired by UGC chairman Abdul Mannan, VCs of different universities spoke at the meeting.
