SAVAR: Jahangirnagar University (JU) authorities have curtailed the celebration of Pahela Baishakh, the first day of Bangla New Year 1426, following the death of an English department student last night.

Nuruzzaman Nibvrit, 22, a third-year student of the English department, died of cardiac arrest around 10pm Saturday, Banglanews JU correspondent reports.

The student died of cardiac arrest due to breathing problems, said Dr Haranath Sarker, a duty doctor at Enam Medical College and Hospital in Savar.

JU acting Registrar Rahima Kaniz told Banglanews that they have decided to cut short the celebration programme of the university mourning the death of their student.

Meanwhile, some students of JU staged a sit-in on the university’s Shaheed Minar premises since last night demanding a full-fledged medical centre on the campus.

The university medical centre lacks modern equipment, necessary medicines in need of an emergency, they alleged.
