Jamalpur: A portion of Pathorshi-Kulkandi flood-control dam collapsed Tuesday under the pressure of gushing water of the rain-fed Jamuna River, submerging some 20 villages in Islampur upazila.

Incessant rain and onrush of hill water from across the border for last few days deteriorated the flood situation in the upazila further, leaving some 10,000 people virtually marooned.

Sugarcane, jute and other seasonal crops on a vast tracts of land were inundated by the floodwater, said a WDB source.

Local people apprehended further deterioration of the flood situation, as monsoon remained active with intermittent rain.

While visiting the flood-hit areas, this correspondent found waters rolling into the villages through breaches caused along nearly 400 meters of the embankment.

Scarcity of food and pure drinking water were prevailing in the affected areas.
