A garment worker was killed, and at least 30 others were injured after clashes erupted between police and ready-made garment (RMG) workers in the Ashulia industrial area of Savar on Monday (Sept 30).
The deceased, Kawsar Hossain Khan, 27, worked at Mango Tex Limited in Ashulia's Zirabo area.
The incident occurred in front of the Mondol Group's factory on the Tongi-Ashulia-EPZ road around 11:30 a.m. In addition to the workers, Police Superintendent Sarwar Alam and several members of the joint forces were also injured during the clashes.
Eyewitnesses reported that Mondol Group workers were holding a meeting with authorities and law enforcement agencies that morning. When the meeting was unsuccessful, the workers positioned themselves outside the factory.
Tensions escalated when police confronted the workers, leading to police charges. Agitated workers subsequently vandalized several RAB and police vehicles. The situation intensified when police opened fire in an attempt to regain control, according to other industrial workers.
Yusuf Ali, duty manager at Enam Medical, informed Banglanews that three individuals with gunshot wounds were brought to the hospital. Kawsar succumbed to his injuries, while the other two are currently receiving treatment.
In this regard, several attempts were made to contact Superintendent of Police Sarwar Alam of Industrial Area Police-1, but he was not available.
