UNHR office in Dhaka after review: Touhid

Foreign Affairs Adviser Md Touhid Hossain on Wednesday (Oct 30) said that the interim government is yet to take a decision on opening an office of the United Nations Human Rights (UNHR) in Dhaka.

“We are yet to decide … there was only a discussion … we are reviewing the matter,” he told reporters after holding a meeting with visiting UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk at the foreign ministry.

He said there was no formal proposal from the UN regarding opening its office here, but added that “discussion has taken place”.

He said that Dhaka neither gave its approval or disapproval to the UN regarding the issue. "We are looking into the needs of such an office in Bangladesh," he added.

During the second day of his two-day visit, Türk held several discussions on human rights issues, meeting with senior government officials, civil society representatives and other stakeholders.

The UN human rights chief was scheduled to meet Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus on Wednesday before meeting the press this evening.
