The European Union has expressed its expectation for Bangladesh to hold free, fair, and internationally acceptable elections.
EU Ambassador Michael Miller made the remarks on Tuesday (August 19), while speaking to journalists at the Election Commission Bhaban in Dhaka.
He announced that the EU would provide €4 million in assistance to the Election Commission for the upcoming polls.
“We hope the next election will be free, fair, and acceptable by international standards,” he said, adding that a team of EU expert observers is scheduled to arrive in Bangladesh in September.
Miller underlined that election monitoring in Bangladesh is a priority for the EU. “The European Union has always stood by democracy, and we will continue to support democratic elections,” he stated.
The ambassador further explained that the EU will work with the Election Commission and civil society to enhance voter education, training, and institutional capacity.
Besides, efforts will be directed towards addressing disinformation, misinformation, and other digital challenges in the electoral process.
Earlier in the day, Miller led a delegation of EU representatives in a meeting with Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin.
