Bangladesh-US ties to remain steady post-US election: Ex-envoy

Former Bangladeshi ambassador Munshi Fayez Ahmed said today (Nov 6) that regardless of whether the Republican or Democratic Party wins the US election, significant changes in Bangladesh-US relations are unlikely.

However, if Donald Trump wins, there might be a slight “slowdown” in the relationship, he remarked on Wednesday.

When asked about the potential impact on Bangladesh’s relations with the interim government if Trump wins, Ambassador Fayez told Banglanews24, “Any party may be in power in the US, but that won’t bring significant changes in bilateral relations with Bangladesh.”

He also said, “Democratic Party has a somewhat closer connection with the current Bangladeshi government, so a Trump victory may bring a slight slowdown in engagement. But no major shift is expected”

When asked about the potential impact on the Israel-Palestine conflict, Ambassador Fayez said that regardless of which party wins, it is unlikely that the US will play a significant role in resolving the conflict, as both parties have similar positions regarding Israel.

On US-China relations post-election, he said, "While previous administrations have continued trade relations with China, political pressure from the US remained constant. If Trump returns to power, that pressure might ease slightly."
