Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB)-4 has arrested an accused in the murder of Swapan Mia, 38, in Manikganj's Ghior upazila.
The arrestee was identified as Billal Mia, 35, a resident of Golapnagar in Ghior, is the son of the late Rupchan Mia.
RAB-4’s CPC-3 Company Commander Lt Commander Mohammad Arif Hossain confirmed the matter on Friday (Nov 22) afternoon.
According to sources, Billal and the victim, Swapan Mia, had a longstanding dispute over land ownership. Several local arbitration sessions were held to resolve the matter. As part of an agreement, Billal was supposed to fill a ditch near Swapan's house with soil. However, Swapan began filling the ditch with garbage, bamboo, and wood instead.
When Swapan’s uncle Falu Mia objected to the garbage dumping, an angry Billal verbally abused him. Swapan’s sister-in-law Jahura, 32, intervened to calm the situation but was also assaulted. Later, Billal and his associates attacked Swapan with local weapons.
Swapan was critically injured in the attack. Locals rushed him to a hospital, where doctors declared him dead. Following the incident, Swapan’s mother filed a murder case with Ghior Police Station.
Acting on a tip-off, RAB-4 conducted a raid on Haji Camp Road near the airport area in Dhaka and arrested Billal.
He has been handed over to the local police for further legal action, said Lt Commander Mohammad Arif Hossain.
