Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin on Saturday (Aug 9) identified restoring public confidence as the biggest challenge ahead for the Election Commission in delivering a free and fair vote.
Speaking at a meeting with election officials from the Rangpur division to prepare for the 13th national parliamentary election, he said the commission’s ability to conduct credible elections depends on regaining the trust of the people.
CEC Nasir Uddin highlighted that Nobel laureate Dr. Muhammad Yunus’s public commitment to a fair election has placed additional pressure on the commission to meet high expectations.
“Because of Dr. Yunus’s pledge to the nation, we are under significant pressure, and we are planning accordingly,” he said.
He added that the election schedule will be announced two months prior to the polling date.
Despite recent mass uprisings and revolutionary upheaval, he stated Bangladesh’s law and order situation remains comparatively stable, giving the commission confidence it can manage security challenges during the elections.
The CEC also cautioned against believing unverified information on social media regarding election matters.
He emphasized the inclusion of new personnel in the election process, giving preference to fresh faces over those previously involved.
Later in the day, Nasir Uddin was scheduled to meet with law enforcement and administrative officials at the Rangpur divisional office to discuss election-related security arrangements.
