Nine killed in Mirpur chemical warehouse fire

Nine bodies have been recovered after a fire swept through a chemical warehouse and a garments facility in Dhaka’s Mirpur–Rupnagar area, officials said on Tuesday (October 14).

Talha Bin Jasim, station officer at the Fire Service and Civil Defence headquarters media cell, said firefighters first received an alert at 11:40 am.

Five units were initially deployed, with additional crews joining as the operation expanded. Flames at the garments factory in Shialbari were later brought under control, but work to fully contain the blaze at the chemical godown continued into the afternoon, he said.

Jasim added that while crews were still dousing hotspots at the warehouse, the risk of the fire spreading further was low.

According to fire service officials, the fire involved a chemical storage facility of Cosmic Pharma and an adjacent garments unit. Eight firefighting units were engaged at peak response.

The origin of the blaze—whether at the warehouse or the factory—has not yet been determined, according to fire officers.

Two men overcome by smoke—identified as Suruj, 30, and Mamun, 35—were taken to the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery (NIBPS) in Dhaka shortly afternoon.

Dr Shawon Bin Rahman, a resident surgeon at the institute, said Suruj sustained about 2% burns and both patients suffered inhalation injuries.
