DHAKA: Country’s seven rivers, including the major ones, went into spate, flowing above the danger levels in the last 24 hours to 6pm Sunday.

The sudden swelling of waters in the rivers deteriorated the situation of late flooding in several districts, according to an official flood forecast.

The Flood Forecast and Warning Center (FFWC) Sunday said the waters of the Brahmaputra, the Jamuna and the Meghna kept "increasing and the rise will continue for next two days".

The flood situation in Sirajganj, Kurigram, Madaripur, Munshiganj and Sylhet districts deteriorated in the last 24 hours, thethe cause   FFWC sources said.

They said water levels at 33 out of 62 points measured increased while at 19 points receded and at three points remained unchanged.

River waters at seven points are flowing over the danger line.

FFWC sources said the waters of the Brahmaputra in Cilmari of Kurigram were flowing 14 centimetres above the danger mark while the Jamuna in Sirajganj was flowing 17 cm over the danger line.

The Padma at Goalanda and Bhagyakul points was flowing 25 and 54 cm over the danger line and at Kanaighat point flowing 52 cm over the danger mark.

Heavy rainfall was cited as the cause of the rush of water.  

The highest 103 mm rainfall was recorded in Bogra in the 24 hours.
