Another individual who sustained bullet injuries during the recent unrest in Gopalganj has passed away, raising the death toll from Wednesday’s clashes to five.
The victim, Ramjan Munshi, 32, a rickshaw-puller from the Thanapara area, passed away around 2:45am on Friday while undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).
Inspector Md Faruk of the hospital police outpost confirming the matter said his body has been sent for autopsy.
According to his brother, Ramjan was shot near the cinema hall area while returning from dropping off a passenger. He was initially taken to Sadar Hospital and later transferred to DMCH.
The clashes erupted during the National Citizens’ Party’s (NCP) scheduled rally and involved law enforcers, Awami League supporters, and members of the banned Chhatra League. Over 50 people, including police, were injured.
Four others—Sohel Mollah, Dipto Saha, Emon Talukdar, and Ramjan Kazi—were declared dead on the night of the incident. Several critically injured were shifted to hospitals in Dhaka.
In response, the administration imposed Section 144, followed by a curfew from Wednesday 8pm, later extended until further notice with a three-hour break on Friday.
The Ministry of Home Affairs confirmed the curfew timings, and a three-member probe committee has been formed to investigate the violence.
Security remains tight as police, army, and RAB continue patrols. Public movement is limited, with residents urged to stay indoors.
