FARIDPUR: A Krishak League leader was killed and 25 other people were injured in a violent clash between two rival groups in the poura area of Bhanga upazila Monday morning.

The dead was identified as Montu Sheikh, 38, general secretary of the municipal unit of Krishak League, the peasant front of the ruling party. He was also nephew of Awami League municipal ward- 6 president Sheikh Sayed Ali.

Police and witnesses said supporters of Sayed Ali and poura councilor Abul Kalam had an altercation on Sunday over an eve-teasing incident.

“Following the brawls, both the groups equipped with lethal weapons locked horns at about 9:30am Monday. During the clash, Kalam’s supporters hacked Montu to death,” said an eyewitness account of the killing.

Protesting the killing, Sayed Ali’s supporters ransacked and set ablaze a number of houses of their rivals, leaving 25 people injured during the rioting.

The injured were admitted to Bhanga Health Complex and Faridpur Medical College Hospital.

Later, police and RAB personnel went to the scene and pacified the feuding groups. Additional police have been deployed in the area to fend off further flare-up.
