DHAKA: The laid-off employees of a project of Bangladesh Rural Development Board (BRDB) Sunday staged a demonstration asking the government to reinstate them in the board jobs.

Several hundred employees of the Palli Zibikayan Prokolpo formed a human chain in the National Press Club area to press home their demand.

The agitating employees said they were permanent staff of the BRDB and the government sent them to the project in 1999. “Since the project has been completed, we are supposed to get back our main job,” leader of the protestors Abdur Razzaque said during the demonstration.

Around 1800-manned project used to provide loan to poor people in three divisions of the country. As the project tenure was over, the staff members have not got salary since January 2010.

From the demonstration, they announced a grand rally to be held on June 6 at BRDB head office.
