The leaders of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement and Jatiya Nagorik Committee on Saturday (October 26) held a meeting with BNP with a view to reach a political consensus in favour of their demand for immediate removal of President Mohammed Shahabuddin.
A seven-member delegation of student leaders held a meeting at BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s office in Gulshan, Dhaka, around 5:15 pm to reach a consensus on the issue.
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Standing Committee Member Salauddin Ahmed, and Joint Secretary General Shaheed Uddin Chowdhury Annie shared their party’s stance in this regard during the meeting.
Earlier, the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement and the National Citizen Committee demanded the removal of the president for the sake of carrying out smooth reforms to various state organs.
Later on 23 October, three senior BNP leaders, including Salauddin Ahmed, met the Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus and shared their party’s stance that a vacancy in the president post would lead to a constitutional and political crisis in the country, which BNP does not want at this moment.
Against the backdrop, the leaders of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement and the National Citizen Committee initiated discussions with political parties to build national consensus on the removal of the president.
Meanwhile, echoing the students’ demand, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami also raised a demand for immediate resignation of the president to get rid of the prevailing political crisis centering the issue.
