ACC files corruption cases against Saber, his wife

The Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) has filed separate cases against former Dhaka-9 lawmaker Saber Hossain Chowdhury and his wife Rehena Chowdhury for allegedly amassing illegal wealth over several decades.

ACC Director General Md Akhter Hossain disclosed the development during a regular media briefing at the commission’s headquarters. The cases were filed by Deputy Director Md Saiduzzaman at the ACC’s integrated Dhaka office.

According to the ACC, Saber Hossain Chowdhury, who served as the minister for Forest, Environment, and Climate Change, acquired movable and immovable assets worth approximately Tk 12.25 crore between 1989 and 2025, exceeding his legally declared income.

The commission also reported suspicious financial transactions totaling Tk 124.61 crore through 26 bank accounts during the same period.

The case against Saber Chowdhury has been filed under Section 27(1) of the ACC Act-2004, Section 5(2) of the Corruption Prevention Act-1947, and sub-sections 2 and 3 under Section 4 of the Money Laundering Prevention Act-2012.

Similarly, the ACC alleges that Rehena Chowdhury accumulated illegal wealth worth around Tk 26.97 crore and conducted suspicious transactions of Tk 150.88 crore through three bank accounts from 1999 to 2025.

Her case has been filed under Section 27(1) of the ACC Act-2004, sub-sections 2 and 3 under Section 4 of the Money Laundering Prevention Act-2012, and Section 109 of the Bangladesh Penal Code (BPC).

The ACC emphasized that the investigations are ongoing and that the commission is committed to taking legal action against public figures involved in corruption and illegal financial activities.

This move comes amid heightened scrutiny of politicians and public officials accused of misusing power and accumulating wealth beyond their legal means, signaling the commission’s continued focus on accountability and transparency.
