BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has urged the government not to make rash decisions on President Md. Shahabuddin’s removal issue, amid ongoing student protests calling for his resignation.
Fakhrul addressed journalists on Sunday (Oct 27) at 11:30 am after paying homage to the late President Ziaur Rahman’s grave at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in Dhaka, marking the 46th founding anniversary of Jatiyatabadi Jubo Dal.
“We have taken an oath today—to defend our independence at any cost,” Fakhrul said.
He said, “After a prolonged struggle against the fascist Awami League, we attained what we consider our second independence on August 5. Jubo Dal’s contribution to this struggle has been significant.”
He added, “Even with our Chairperson's illness, Jubo Dal has strengthened under Tarique Rahman’s leadership. As we advance toward safeguarding the country's sovereignty, Jubo Dal’s role remains essential. It will lead the way in standing against those who do not wish well for Bangladesh.”
In response to a query on BNP’s stance regarding anti-discrimination student leaders meeting with BNP on the President’s removal, Fakhrul noted, “The matter will be discussed in BNP’s highest decision-making forum. After comprehensive discussions, our stance will be made clear.”
Fakhrul continued, “As we stated before, the people’s uprising must be consolidated to bring the results of this movement to fruition. National unity is necessary, and no unilateral decisions should be made. We believe the issue should be addressed within the constitutional framework. Electoral reforms should be prioritized, followed by a timely election.”
Asked if election delays could lead to conspiracy, Fakhrul remarked, “We have repeatedly emphasized the importance of holding elections soon. Power must be transferred to a constitutional authority without delay.”
Jubo Dal President Monayem Munna and moderated by General Secretary Nurul Islam Nayan. Alongside Fakhrul, BNP leaders, including Standing Committee Member Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, Vice Chairman Barkat Ullah Bulu, Chairperson’s Advisor Moazzem Hossain Alal, and other central and city Jubo Dal leaders, were present.
