Election Commission (EC) for the first time in the country’s history has registered a political party representing minority communities.
The party, named Bangladesh Minority Janata Party (BMJP), has been allotted the election symbol ‘Rocket.’
The registration certificate was handed over to the party leaders by EC Secretary Akhtar Ahmed on Wednesday (April 9) at the EC headquarters in Agargaon.
BMJP President Sukriti Kumar Mondol told reporters that they had first applied for registration in 2018 but did not get approval due to some special reasons.
He said after the fall of the government on August 5 last year, the party filed a writ petition with the High Court. On February 11, the court ordered the EC to grant the registration.
“We have finally received the long-awaited registration certificate today,” said Mondol.
According to EC officials, this is the first time a minority-based party has been registered. With this, the total number of registered political parties in the country now stands at 50.
