RAJSHAHI: Some 11 activists of Chhatra Shibir, the student wing of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, were detained from different areas of the district for attacking policemen and snatching their firearms.
The detainees are Masud Rana, Mostafijur Rahman, Rabiul Islam, Naiar, Jony, Ramzan, Faisal, Sujon, Atik, Sohel Rana and Shahinur Islam.
Sources said that the law enforcers, in a combing operation, held the Shibir activists between Tuesday morning and Wednesday morning.
Rajshahi Metropolitan Police (RMP) spokesperson Ifte Khayer Alam, also the Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) said the detainees were produced before the district court.
Jamaat’s student affiliate members beat two police personnel and snatched their arms at Shal Bagan area earlier on Tuesday, the first day of BNP-called nationwide infinite blockade.
Two other policemen were also injured at that time when hit by brickbats hurled by strikers.
Later, Jahangir Alam, a Sub-Inspector (SI) of city’s Shah Makhdum Thana filed a case against 60 to 70 picketers, in which 49 are mentioned by name of Jamaat, the key ally of BNP.
The 11 Shibir men, however, were detained after police started looking into the matter.
On the other hand, according to Rajshahi ASP, the physical condition of the injured cops is improving.
