DHAKA: Jamaat-e-Islami, key ally of BNP-led 20-party alliance, urged party men and people of the country for continuation of the nationwide roadway, waterway and railway blockade for indefinite period.
Jamaat issued a statement on the matter, signed by its acting secretary general Dr. Shafiqur Rahman, on Tuesday night some eight days after the blockade began January 6.
Wednesday is the ninth day of the blockade.
Shafiqur alleged that the government is carrying out torture, repression and mass arrest against the alliance men, urging people to continue the demonstration with peaceful processions and rallies.
The party also urged the government to show respect to people’s will by stepping down from power for holding a national poll under a caretaker government.
